More About the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA)

The "Typical" LUCA Timeline

LUCA activities tend to occur between early July, 2017 through February, 2018.  The Census Bureau sends a letter to the highest elected official in each locality extending an invitation to participate in LUCA.  The first step in the process is for officials to respond affirmatively to that request.

LUCA Benefits to Communities

The updating of addresses provides communities with the opportunity to improve the US Census Bureau's residential address list used to survey households in their jurisdiction. This list is the foundation for census surveying and determines the number of households surveyed.

By participating in the LUCA, communities ensure that the Census 'gets it right.'  Right in terms of having accurate local data that can be used for regional planning.  In addition to quality data, communities ensure a more accurate count of residents, which is used to allocate billions in federal funds.
